A talk on The Crescent Crossing: A Journey of Sand, Grit, and Discovery was presented at the Arab British Chamber of Commerce by Adam Wilton MBE and Gavin Booth MBE. Here the duo shared the remarkable story of their journey across Saudi Arabia’s Empty Quarter (Rub’ al Khali), the worlds’ largest sand desert.
Back in January 2025, Adam and Gavin completed their extraordinary crossing on foot, unsupported and self-sufficient. Hauling custom-built carts each laden with over 230 kg of supplies and water, they undertook a journey never-before attempted in this manner.
For Adam and Gavin it was their first time in Saudi Arabia. Starting in As Sulayil, the duo traversed nearly 800 km of one of the harshest environments on Earth, concluding their expedition in Haradh, via the oasis of Ash Shalfa. Over 22 gruelling days, they drew deeply on their physical and mental reserves.
Along the way, they experienced moments of profound solitude in the heart of the desert, punctuated by unexpected yet memorable encounters with Saudis. The Crescent Crossing was not only a test of endurance and resilience, but also a journey of cultural discovery and personal growth amid one of the world’s last great wildernesses. From the remote and untouched south to the north where they encountered the oil industry, their journey provided a window into both the human and physical geographical evolution of the desert.
