The flag of Saudi Arabia was raised at the Olympic Village in London on 22nd July as athletes from the Kingdom prepare for the opening of the Summer Games on 27th July.
The 17 men and 2 women who make up the country team will compete in equestrian, track and field (“athletics”), weightlifting, and judo, over the course of the July 27–August 12 Olympic Games. The addition of Sarah Attar (800m) and Wodjan Shaherkani (judo) to the team was announced earlier this month following speculation about the inclusion of women on the Saudi country team. Equestrian competitor Dalma Rushdi Malhas was thought to be a likely team member but she was forced to withdraw from consideration in June when her horse was injured and unable to compete.
Saudi Ambassador to the UK, Prince Mohammed bin Nawaf bin Abdulaziz, expressed his support for the team and the games according to a press statement today that noted the embassy will host the Kingdom’s Olympic media center.
