Saudi Cinema Now: a conversation with Hisham Fageeh and Fatima Al-Banawi
The Society hosted a discussion, at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London, by the 2 stars of the acclaimed, recent Saudi-made film, Barakah Meets Barakah, Hisham Fageeh and Fatima al-Banawi, with extracts from the film and clips of other work the stars have done.
It was a most entertaining and popular evening, introduced by the Rt. Hon. Alistair Burt MP and Caroline Montagu, Countess of Sandwich, Chair of the Society’s Arts Sub-Committee.

Hisham Fageeh is an actor, producer and director based in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and co-producer and star of “Barakah Meets Barakah”. His work has been discussed by The New York Times, Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone, BBC, Variety and others. Best known for his 2013 viral video "No Woman, No Drive", Hisham started performing stand-up while working in Washington, DC. During his Master’s at Columbia University, he studied improvisational comedy at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater.
Fatima Al-Banawi is currently resident artist at Cité des Arts, Paris. In 2015 she founded The Other Story Project about life narratives, co-founded the Theatre of the Oppressed Jeddah Chapter in 2010 staging one of its plays at Harvard in 2014. She trained with Ping Chong & Co in New York in 2015, was internationally recognized for her debut in “Barakah Meets Barakah” in 2016, and recently co-starred in the Saudi OSN’s new series, Bashar. She has a BA in Counseling Psychology from Effat University, Jeddah, and a MA in Theological Studies from Harvard.
